Calcutta, March 2:
MOHUN BAGAN 3 FC KOCHIN 0
After two successive defeats on the road, it was a happy homecoming for Mohun Bagan, as they outplayed FC Kochin 3-0 in today's 13th-round Tata National Football League match at Salt Lake Stadium.
The win was significant on one more account: It came with Jose Ramirez Barreto serving a one-match ban. This Brazilian must feel that he missed a binge, considering the condition of the Kochi team.
FC Kochin, under Czech coach Karel Stromsik, neither had the skill nor the will to put up a fight and a lack of purpose was distinct in their aimless way of going about things after Mohun Bagan pumped in two goals in the opening quarter.
R.C. Prakash redeemed himself with a goal, his team's first, and Abdulateef Seriki got the other two. The Nigerian could have returned a hattrick, but an unclean first touch denied him further success.
Keen to prove they are a force even without Barreto, Mohun Bagan attacked from the word go and found the net in the seventh minute.
It was a floater from the right by an overlapping Dulal Biswas and R. P. Singh just about managed to knock it down towards Prakash near the first post. The striker reproduced the kind of agility that made him a prolific scorer last season and converted with a first-time left-footer.
Seriki got going four minutes later and owes a share of his success to some clumsy defending. Basudeb Mondal's cross from the left landed between a defender and the striker but the FC Kochin player failed to stop Seriki from wresting possession even after he had failed to receive the ball properly. The rest was easy as Seriki got away towards the right and scored with a strong right-footer.
Dulal had a role to play in the third goal too as he floated one from the right, which found Seriki unmarked inside the box and the striker obliged with a powerful, diagonal header. Before and after this, Seriki came close on a few occasions but a blend of improper receiving and erratic shooting let him down.
FC Kochin's only chance came in the 71st minute but Sushanth Matthew failed to beat an advancing goalkeeper after running in with a through pass by Anil Kumar. That was the beginning and end of FC Kochin's journey towards the Mohun Bagan goal.
The win took Mohun Bagan to 22 points and left FC Kochin on an ominous 10 and from now, survival in the apex tier of the League will very much be their priority.
