Calcutta: India recorded their first ever victory in the Asia Pacific Junior Amateur Golf Championship, bagging the honours in both the boys’ and girls’ team events as the prestigious competition concluded at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, here, on Sunday.

In the individual events, Suradit Yongcharoenchai of Thailand triumphed in the boys’ category, while India’s Aditi Ashok prevailed in the girls’ section after a thrilling play-off with Min-Jou Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Led by the brilliant Aditi and with Ridhima Dilawari rising to the occasion, India B hardly had to break any sweat to win the girls’ division. They ended with a total of 442 with the Chinese Taipei A side, featuring Yu-Hsin Chang and Chen, finishing second with 446.

The Chinese Taipei B team, comprising Hsin-En Tsai and Cih-Hui Chen, finished third with 452.

“It’s always a nice feeling when you win two events in a particular competition. It wasn’t easy for us, as our opponents were quite strong. But we always had faith in our abilities and backed ourselves to come out on top,” an elated Aditi said.

Among the boys, Viraj Madappa and Manu Gandas led the India A team to victory. They topped with a total of 586, followed by Thailand B (594) and Chinese Taipei A (595).

Coach Jasjit Singh sounded satisfied with the performance of his wards. “Of course, this victory was very important. The win is a result of the hard work that these kids had put in prior to the tournament. Their hard work has paid off… That’s all I can say,” Jasjit said.

Manu and Viraj had their chances in the individual section, too, but missed out on the title due to Suradit’s consistency. Suradit was flawless right from the start and it was his grit and determination that helped him emerge on top.
