East Bengal, who will be kicking off their centenary-year celebrations on August 1, unveiled their new home and away jerseys at the club tent on Saturday.

The red and gold brigade, along with their kit sponsor Kaizen Sports, conceptualised the new jersey, keeping in mind the design of the oldest-ever home jersey of the club which could be traced.

“It was worn in the year 1925 or 1926,” secretary Kalyan Majumdar said.

Speaking on the new design of the jersey, senior club official and Quess East Bengal FC board member Debabrata Sarkar said: “Our idea was to design the centenary year’s jersey similar to the first-ever jersey of the club.

“We tried to trace back as much as possible, but unfortunately could not find out the jersey that was worn in 1920. So, the oldest one we found was roughly in the year 1925 or 1926. This jersey was found at former player Nepal Chakraborty’s residence.”

Incidentally, Chakraborty was the first-ever goal-scorer of the historic Calcutta Football League Derby in 1925. The arch-rivals met each other for the first time that year in the CFL.

East Bengal, under the captaincy of Mona Dutta, won the tie 1-0 thanks to Chakraborty’s solitary strike.

Sarkar also informed that on Thursday, head coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia would be requested to have a practice session at the ground. “That’s the day the club was formed.

“So, in keeping with our centenary celebrations, we would like the practice session to be held at the club,” he said.

Alejandro has not been a big fan of the ground conditions and always has his training sessions at the Salt Lake Stadium training facilities. “Hopefully, he will agree,” Sarkar said.

East Bengal will officially start their season on August 3 in the Durand Cup where they take on the Army Red football team. They are pitted in Group A of the competition alongside Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC and Army Red.
