AUSTRALIA vs ZIMBABWE, Nottingham June 9, 1983 (Group match)
Result: Zimbabwe won by 13 runs
The opening match of the World Cup saw the game’s biggest upset, when a bunch of amateurs from Zimbabwe managed to beat Australia by 13 runs. Having been put in, Zimbabwe, in their first-ever appearance in the competition, were 94 for five, when their captain, Duncan Fletcher (69 not out), a former professional with Rishton in the Lancashire League, led their recovery by adding 70 in 15 overs with Kevin Curran and 75 in 12 overs with Iain Butchart. Australia, on their part, made it difficult for themselves by dropping five catches in the field as the minnows managed to reach 239/6. Australia looked all set to win when Kepler Wessels (76) and Graeme Wood (31) put on 61 for the opening wicket. However, they kept on losing wickets and slipped behind the required rate against Fletcher’s four wickets, backed by some fine ground fielding and catching. The Aussies fell short by 13 runs!
