Calcutta: Brazilian striker Edmilson Marques inspired Southern Samity to a stunning 2-1 win over giants East Bengal in a big upset at the 115th IFA Shield at Salt Lake Stadium Saturday.
After taking the lead through Ravinder Singh, East Bengal lost the momentum as Edmilson (43rd and 90+2nd minutes) struck once in each half to fashion the brilliant turnaround by Southern Samity in the Group A league match.
East Bengal started the proceedings on a positive note when Ravinder fired in with a brilliant left-footer. Playing with three forwards in Tolgay Ozebe, Robin Singh and Baljit Singh Sahni, East Bengal began to look wayward.
A 33rd minute goal by Delhi lad Robin was adjudged offside as Southern Samity coached by veteran Carlos Pereira looked to restore parity. Their chance came in just before the interval when Edmilson’s clinical right-footer from a freekick found the equaliser.
Just when it appeared the match would end in a 1-1 stalemate, Edmilson had other ideas as the Brazilian scored another in the injury time for a spectacular win.
