Calcutta: East Bengal scored two, missed too many, and in the end logged three points against WB Police in a CFL Premier Division A match at their club ground on Monday.
Lalrindika Ralte, coming back to East Bengal after a year with NUFC, scored the first in the 15th minute and Kassim Aidara opened his East Bengal account on club debut with a smart header six minutes before half-time.
Technical director Subhas Bhowmick made just one change in East Bengal's starting line-up. Injured full-back Lalrozama Fanai was replaced by skipper Samad Ali Mallick.
The first goal's move started with Mallick's cross from the right flank that fell to Aidara inside the box. He saw Ralte's run down the middle and squared the ball for him. Ralte initially took a shot at goal, which was saved by goalkeeper Soumava Ghosh, but the goalkeeper could not prevent the rebound effort from going in.
Bhowmick made a tactical change in the 32nd minute as he introduced Bidyasagar Singh in place of Brandon Vanlalremdika. And seven minutes later came the second. Lalrindika forwarded a through down the left flank for Lalram Chullova who sent a pinpoint cross into the box. Aidara found the back of the net with a smart header.
East Bengal should have scored again within the first 15 minutes of the second half. Bidyasagar Singh missed one of the easiest chances of the match when he failed to score from a one-on-one opportunity. Danmawia Ralte spotted Bidyasagar's run down the right flank and forwarded a long ball. The youngster received the ball inside the box but failed to score as it hit the side-netting.
Ace midfielder Mahmoud Al Amna was finally introduced in the 68th minute and he brought with him much-needed fluidity in East Bengal's midfield.
The match though was all about Lalrindika. Bhowmick has given him a role behind the lone striker Bali Gagandeep and most of the East Bengal attacks originated from him. Lalrindika is more used to playing on the left flank making speedy runs and known for taking thunderous shots.
His out-of-the-world left-footed volley in East Bengal colours on that November 24 evening in 2013 against Mohun Bagan is the first that comes to mind.
On Monday, he linked up well with Aidara and with more practice they should provide some entertainment for the East Bengal fans. "It's early days. More we get to know each other, the better we will be able to combine," Man-of-the-Match Ralte said of his partnership with Aidara at the post-match media conference.
So what about his new role? "Well Subhas Sir knows me since Churchill days. He has given me this new role and the goal will give me confidence. I am getting used to playing behind the striker. Hopefully I will be able to deliver," he said.
