Calcutta: All-rounder Dwayne Bravo seems to be having a fantastic time lately. Not just is he the highest wicket-taker so far in this IPL, for Chennai Super Kings, but he has also been named captain of the West Indies team for next month’s Champions Trophy.
Bravo replaces Darren Sammy, who remains skipper of the Test and Twenty20 squads. “Our results in Tests and Twenty20s have been showing consistent improvement and Sammy deserves kudos for the work he has done in leading and moulding the team in these formats.
“We remain confident in his leadership in these formats and will recommend that he continues as captain for the two formats. However our ODI results have not been as strong and we believe that it is best that we freshen the leadership of the team in this version,” chairman of the selection Panel, Clyde Butts, said.
Heaping praises on Bravo’s contribution to West Indies cricket so far, Butts expressed confidence on the all-rounder’s transition to captaincy being a smooth one. He also added that this decision of naming Bravo as skipper will enable Sammy to focus more on Tests and T20s.
“Dwayne is an experienced, seasoned and senior cricketer, who has demonstrated leadership qualities. He has served as the West Indies vice-captain and has had some success leading the team on certain occasion.
“We believe that his transition to the position of captaincy will be a smooth one. “We have every confidence in Bravo as the leader of the ODI team. The decision will also allow Sammy to focus on Tests and T20s as captain,” Butts explained.
