Day of Virat's return & two hat-tricks

Virat Kohli's 47-ball 62 was not good enough for Royal Challengers Bangalore to beat Mumbai Indians at the Chinnaswamy on Friday, but it helped the Indian cricket fans let out a collective sigh of relief. Calcutta: Virat Kohli's 47-ball 62 was not good enough for Royal Challengers Bangalore to beat Mumbai Indians at the Chinnaswamy on Friday, but it helped the Indian cricket fans let out a collective sigh of relief. For the knock, peppered with five boundaries and two sixes, was a sure sign that the RCB and India captain was back, free from his injury.

Two hat-tricks - the first by Samuel Badree and then by Andrew Tye - also brightened up Friday's IPL matches.

The agonising image of Virat walking off the field in Ranchi, clutching his shoulder, after injuring it trying to save a boundary on Day 1 of third Test between India and Australia, would still be fresh in the mind of his fans. The captain missed the fourth and final Test, though with India winning the series, his agony was lessened to a large extent.

On Friday, Kohli, coming out to bat nearly after a month's break, did not seem rusty. He made his intentions clear in the third over, when he hit a six and two fours off Tim Southee.

When Kohli was dismissed by Mitchell McClenaghan, RCB were 110/2, with more than four overs in hand. But then, with Kieron Pollard in a vicious mood, the Mumbai Indians reached the target with seven balls to spare.

Pollard took the shine out of another performance on Friday - Badree's hat-trick, also the IPL X's first. Unfortunately, Badree ended up in the losers' camp. If this could be seen as a battle between compatriots - both coming from Trinidad - it was definitely Pollard's day.

Badree returned with impressive figures of 4-1-9-4, but the other RCB bowlers were nowhere close.

He sent back Parthiv Patel, McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma in the second, third and fourth balls of the third over, and then added the wicket of Nitish Rana to his kitty.

However, despite Kohli and Badree's efforts, RCB lost by four wickets.

"It is a special day. It is Good Friday. It was a good Friday for me. Unfortunately, it was not a good Friday for the team. I just think we did not have enough runs on board," Badree said after the match.

"It is a nice feeling to get a hat-trick. To get three wickets in the Powerplay - normally teams chasing lose games, but unfortunately it did not go our way tonight. Tremendous feeling to get a hat-trick, but it could have been so much better if we had won," said the leg-spinner.

In Rajkot, Gujarat Lions' Australian pacer Tye took five wickets, including a hat-trick, to restrict Rising Pune Supergiant to 171/8. Unlike Badree, Tye's efforts did not go in vain and the Lions romped home to a seven-wicket victory with two overs to spare.

Tye had already got the wickets of Rahul Tripathy and the dangerous Ben Stokes.

But it was the 20th over that saw him in his elements, as he sent back Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary and Shardul Thakur off consecutive balls to record the second hat-trick of IPL X.
