Calcutta: Rising Pune Supergiants coach Stephen Fleming slammed the Duckworth-Lewis system after his team lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets.
The rain-interrupted match saw the Supergiants bat for 17-odd overs before rain stopped play. They had scored 103 for six at the stoppage.
The D/L method later revised the target to 66 off 9 overs. The Knights knocked off the required runs pretty easily.
Speaking at the post-match media conference, Fleming said that as soon as the D/L method was applied, the Supergiants knew that the match was over for them.
"It's the Duckworth-Lewis system... As soon as that was employed, we knew the game was over. We could have got 135... Maybe 140... 25 runs in the last three overs could have given us 130-plus.
"It would then have been a good game for us. The track was turning. It was going to be a difficult chase. But with the rain and Duckworth-Lewis, it was pretty much game over for us. As simple as that," Fleming said.
He further said that the D/L method was not ideally suited for T20 cricket. "Duckworth-Lewis method is not made for the T20s. Over the years it hasn't changed. It's ridiculous. So until that is addressed by the concerned authorities, you will just have to hope that it doesn't rain," Fleming said.
Asked if the Supergiants were a bit cautious in their approach, Fleming said: "The approach was not to be cautious, it was to play positively. We lost wickets because the ball turned. It was difficult to score... That is how we thought the pitch would be... We treated it as normal.
"We knew we will lose wickets throughout the innings... So 135 would have been a good total. But as soon as you reduce that score, because of rain, it doesn't stay the same."
Supergiants captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni remained not out on 8 off 22 balls. But Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, didn't think Dhoni was unusually slow in his scoring.
"The pitch was slow and could have got slower. We were looking at 135-140... With Dhoni there were looking forward to those last two overs in particular. It was tough batting out there. But if there was no rain, it would have given us more chance."
