Chandigarh: Attention continued to focus on the positions of Craig Kieswetter and Jade Dernbach on Sunday after Ashley Giles, the new one-day coach, admitted that England were “battered” in Ranchi and would look at the possibility of changes before the series resumes on Wednesday.

England must beat India in Mohali and Dharamsala to reverse the 2-1 scoreline. Without altering personnel for the sake of it, Giles wants to see as many of the younger players as possible in India and in New Zealand next month.

“It is not fair to talk about one guy’s position, but nobody is locked into a team,” Giles said.

“The environment here and in New Zealand is priceless for me, two months on the road. If my start had been New Zealand at home, I would not get to know them warts and all. This is where you find out about people under pressure.”

Giles broadened the question of whether Kieswetter is suffering from a drop in confidence.

“Confidence can go quickly out here for anyone because you get put under a lot of pressure quickly,” he said. “I have concern for all the guys, not that their confidence is shot, but that we need to play better.

“It is like the elephant in the room. The more you talk about it, the worse it gets. We have to identify what bits we need to put right, not over-dramatise it and somehow come out fighting with self-belief.
