Cuttack: Contrasting emotions dominated Kemar Roach’s words at the post-match media conference on Tuesday.
The pacer had every reason to be happy with his own performance after his scary spell had almost taken the match away from India. But he couldn’t hide the disappointment for his team’s narrow one-wicket loss.
“It was a great game… Great performances by both the teams. Playing in India is always tough, we knew about that.
“We didn’t get many runs today, but fought back well to take early Indian wickets. But we just couldn’t finish the match.
:It’s tough to lose like that, of course… But we are a young side and we will learn from all these experiences,” Roach said.
Asked who was responsible for the West Indies missing out on a victory, Roach shot back: “I don’t blame anyone… It’s team game, a team effort. Our goal, always, is to win matches. We hope that win will come in the second match.”
He, however, was candid enough to admit the batting flaws in his team. “We certainly need more runs on the board, that will give us a comfort zone. As far as the bowling is concerned, we did well today… But we should improve on that too because we let the Indians build partnerships today… We shouldn’t ease the pressure after taking the early wickets.”
Speaking about his own performance, Roach said: “It was obviously nice to get those three wickets… It felt pretty good.
“I did well, but it can still be better… But I’m disappointed that we lost the match.” Roach claimed three wickets giving away 46 runs from his 10 overs.
He also had words of praise for Rohit Sharma, the chief architect for India’s win. “Rohit played a very responsible innings today… I am a great fan of his batting. We have played together in the Indian Premier League... But he is an opponent in this series,” Roach said.
