Claudius funeral tomorrow

Calcutta: The funeral of triple Olympic gold medal winner and hockey legend, Leslie Claudius will be held on Sunday. He will be buried near his younger son Robert’s grave at the Lower Circular Road Cemetery.

Claudius who passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness, was shifted to Peace Heaven, from where a procession will begin on Sunday at 10.40 am.

“The procession will first head to Calcutta Customs and then the Veteran’s Club before reaching Rabindra Sadan. His body will be kept there for one-and-half hours,” his son Brandon said.

At Rabindra Sadan, many dignitaries including chief minister Mamata Banerjee and other Olympians are expected to pay their last homage.

“The state government is organising everything… Many of the top dignitaries, including the cheif minister are expected to come and pay their last homage to Claudius at Rabindra Sadan,” Gurbux Singh said.

From Rabindra Sadan, the procession will head to St Paul’s Cathedral and a mass will be held there before Claudius’ final journey to the Lower Circular Road Cemetery in Mullick Bazar where the body will be laid to rest at 2.30pm.
