Calcutta: Lakshmipathy Balaji, who became the toast of the town Sunday night as his deadly cutters ripped through the Rajasthan Royals, Monday revealed that his sister, Padmini, has been his support system in his roller-coaster career.

“She has been there, backing me throughout — good times, bad times. After my back injury, I had given up all hope of ever playing cricket again. At that time, it was she who stood by me and gave me constant confidence to pursue my goal.”

“She called me from US last (Sunday) night, after the match, to congratulate. She follows all my matches.”

Further speaking about his game, he thanked Bengal coach W.V. Raman for helping him with his bowling action.

Balaji appeared upbeat about his current team and termed the Kolkata Knight Riders’ ambience as ‘extremely positive’. He also said the time spent with his idol, Brett Lee, has been very fruitful. “Brett is an inspiration to the whole team….

“He has a lot of inputs to give and helps everyone… I admire him for his resilience. Even after a career-threatening injury, he remained determined and returned. That is a very big deal,” Balaji said.

Sunday’s match also witnessed a few moments of brilliance, thanks to youngster Iqbal Abdulla’s bowling. “He is such an enthusiastic person. You can make it out from his body language. We have all seen him bowl and field. We are yet to see him hold the bat. That would be fantastic too.

“That might happen soon. Or may be not, as our batting line-up is already consolidated and even Yusuf is not getting a chance,” he added

This season of the IPL is a new chapter for Balaji, who has spent the last three with the Chennai Super Kings. The change has been smooth for him.
