London/Calcutta: India's bowling coach Bharat Arun has said that playing an extra batsman in the second Test against England, beginning Thursday, will be a "conservative move" with the Lord's pitch looking more bowler-friendly than Edgbaston, and instead suggested that having five bowlers in the line-up would make more sense.
Speaking at a media conference, Arun said: "Playing an extra batsman here (at Lord's), I would consider that as a conservative move. I think everything depends on the conditions and the conditions are not going to be as friendly as it was in the first Test... It makes more sense to play five bowlers."
But he wouldn't specify if India had any plans of playing two spinners. "We'll take a call on Wednesday, after taking a look at the wicket... But our bowlers have done extremely well in the last game."
Arun, however, informed that Jasprit Bumrah isn't yet ready for action. "He's bowling fit right now, but it's too early to put him into a game-like situation. The plaster on his hand needs to come off first. He's out of contention for the second Test."
Asked about Umesh Yadav, who bowled impressively in the second innings of the first Test, Arun said: "I can't really divulge the conversation we had. Umesh is at his best when he's bowling quick and I thought in the first innings, he was looking at bowling to one line. But in the second innings he was being himself."
India lost the first Test, at Edgbaston, by 31 runs. They couldn't chase down a target of 194 as the batsmen, barring captain Virat Kohli, failed to make any impact.
"Batsmen on both sides found it difficult. If you look at the scores, it's only Virat Kohli and Joe Root who have been able to contend with the moving ball. The conditions were trying. Batsmen from both teams found it difficult. I'm sure the challenge is there for us to adapt even better and we have our plans in place," Arun said.
