Mumbai: We know Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the ice-cool captain and Yuvraj Singh as the talented batsman and fielder. On Wednesday, the fans discovered another, not-oft-seen personality of the two Indian cricket stars — the prankster.
Dhoni and Yuvraj, along with a few other cricketers of the national team, played out a well-rehearsed script to perfection and had the audience in splits, at the function to launch Team India’s new bold blue jersey by Nike here.
Asked if he would try bungee jumping while on the tour of New Zealand, Dhoni said: “I am a bit scared of heights but according to our contracts we are not supposed to do bungee jumping.”
“But would you like to do the bungee jumping,” the anchor persisted. “Our contracts does not allow us,” Dhoni replied, tongue firmly in cheek.
The presenter then turned to Yuvraj: “Dhoni says you are the prankster in the team, do you agree?”
“We are not allowed to say anything on that as per our contracts,” the Punjab batsman said.
The anchor tried to hide his frustration. “Okay, you have been batting at No. 4 and scoring a lot of runs. Are you happy with that,” he asked. “That you must ask Dhoni,” the response came.
The commentator then shifted his attention to Zaheer Khan and asked: “You are the leader of the attack now, are you enjoying the responsibility?”
Yuvraj quickly interrupted. “He is also the leader off the field. Ask him about that.”
“What’s this off-field business,” the anchor wonders at Zaheer.
“That you must ask Dhoni,” was the speedster’s response.
On a more serious note, Dhoni described the forthcoming tour of New Zealand as a tough assignment but said whether at home or away, international cricket was always a difficult proposition.
“It’s better to start as underdogs (in a series). It’s going to be tough, but international cricket is tough whether at home or away. We have heard how beautiful it (New Zealand) is. We would enjoy the tour and hopefully would come back with a couple of trophies.
“We don’t bother whether we are playing Sri Lanka or any other country”, he said.
Both Dhoni and Yuvraj earned praise for their fielding skills from Robin Singh, the Indian team’s fielding coach.
“Yuvi is the best fielder in my book, then there is (Suresh) Raina and Rohit (Sharma). Without the gloves, Dhoni too can challenge anyone in the team. He is a man for all seasons,” Singh, one of the sharpest fielders in his days, said.
