New Delhi: International hockey federation (FIH) president Narinder Batra faced a huge embarrassment, on Tuesday, when he had to apologise for his criticism of the UK Police for summoning Sardar Singh during the Hockey World League in London last year.

Batra is also the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and a former president of Hockey India (HI).

According to a statement issued by the FIH, it has let off Batra with a written warning and an undisclosed penalty for his abusive posts against England hockey and the English law agencies last year.

Batra had accused the English enforcement authorities of acting in an inappropriate manner for summoning former India captain Sardar Singh for interrogation on a sexual abuse complaint.

"The FIH Replacement Disciplinary Commissioner has concluded a disciplinary proceeding against the President of the FIH, Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra, regarding a Facebook post on 19 June 2017 on his personal account... Dr Batra regrets his actions and has publicly apologised for his emotional statement," the FIH said in a statement.

"He is not restricted in any way to pursue his functions as the FIH president," the statement further said.

Batra would also have to pay a certain amount to a sports charity institution and also bear the costs of the disciplinary proceeding.

Last year, British-Indian women's hockey player Ashpal Bhogal had accused Sardar of sexual assault.

Ashpal, who claimed to be engaged with Sardar then, had alleged that the Punjab player had assaulted her repeatedly.

Batra, in his post said: "England is a country which is a safe haven for all fraudsters who have run away from India and agree to invest in England.

"I would love to see the reaction of England and world media if in India the England players are called to police stations."

Back in 2016, Ashpal, a British citizen and a hockey player, filed a complaint at a police station in Ludhiana accusing Sardar of cheating her on pretext of marriage.

The police, however, dismissed charges against Sardar after three months, saying "complaint stands disposed from their side" as "no proof has been found against Sardar during investigation."
