Calcutta, Nov. 15 :
The start of this year?s IFA Shield was insipid. The goalless result apart, there was not much by way of onfield activity by both Mohun Bagan and Tollygunge Agragami at the sparsely populated Rabindra Sarobar stadium today.
Both teams looked out of touch and hardly match-ready. Tollygunge more so.
Mohun Bagan did get their chances, but the will to convert was missing. In the second minute, off a goalmouth scramble, the ball came back off a defender and Mohun Bagan demanded a penalty which referee Goutam Sadhukhan rejected.
In the 30th minute, Tollygunge goalkeeper Bibhas used his height to save a Kasif Jamal right-footer from the top of the box. Eleven minutes later, James Singh?s left-footer came off the crossbar.
Then, in the 69th minute, Khemthang Paite took possession of a Bastab Roy feed but drove straight into Ghosh who had left his charge.
The Mohun Bagan defence stayed, mostly because of the none-too-offensive stance of Tollygunge. Up front, Hari Khadka failed to impress.
Tollygunge managed a chance too. Chandan Das? free-kick from 20 yards was just off the mark. The midriff too functioned well, Isiaka and Felix playing in front of defence and blocking much of the attacks.
Mohun Bagan coach Subrata Bhattacharya blamed his players? scoring inability for the draw. ?You will have to score to win,? he said. ?We dominated all of 90 minutes and it is just that I do not have an effective striker...? Kasif Jamal had to be pulled out in the 54th minute because of a muscle pull.
The new coach blamed the barely three-day period he got with the team for it not being able to settle down.
He also said his team should have got the second-minute penalty. ?That was certainly a penalty,? he said. Jewel Rana did not play because he is down with influenza.
Tollygunge coach Amal Dutta?s gripe was about the ground. ?We practice at the SAI ground, paying Rs 400 per day. Grass has not been cut and practising is difficult. Rabindra Sarobar is supposed to be our home ground but we never got any practice here. The surface here has uneven bounce.?
He also said that because of the excessive expenses elsewhere the players could not be provided a proper diet.
Dutta said he believes Tollygunge will make the semi-final if they can hold Pakhtakor in their next match. He said he was happy the way his team turned out today. ?Next time we meet Bagan, it will be a different story,? he said.
