The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have never won any of the 11 editions of the IPL, but always attract enormous attention on account of one individual — Virat Kohli, the India captain who helms the franchise too.

It won’t be any different on Tuesday, when the latest IPL auction is held at the JW Marriott Resort & Spa on NH 11, a fair distance away from this history-oozing city.

In the lead up, RCB have done away with, among others, head coach Daniel Vettori and released big T20 names such as Brendon McCullum and Quinton de Kock.

Obviously, RCB’s promoters would like the returns to come in. In fact, RCB are in the ‘club’ of three (Delhi DareDevils, now Delhi Capitals, and Kings XI Punjab being the others) never to have won the IPL.

Last year’s consultants, Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra have not only been retained, but elevated to the position of coaches.

Kirsten, by the way, worked with Nehra during his three years as India’s head coach.

World Cup-winning coach Kirsten isn’t coming for the auction on account of a wedding in the family, but Nehra will be present.

“You cannot plan for an auction, for it has its own dynamics. We may want player X, but some other franchise could bid higher...

“An IPL auction is like a game of roulette, so I won’t lose any sleep at all. Of course, I’ll be at the RCB table as (overall) coach for the first time and would have a bigger say,” Nehra told The Telegraph as he was about to board a flight from Mumbai.

On RCB having released the McCullums and the Quintons, Nehra said: “Quinton, for example, is an outstanding player but it’s about what the franchise needs...

“We already have Parthiv Patel...

“In any case, there are restrictions on the number of foreigners in the XI (maximum of four).”

Nehra added: “I’ll be happy picking up no more than four players at the auction as we have retained 15 and it is not about sheer numbers.”

To ensure that both coaches are on the same page, Kirsten and Nehra have been interacting with each other.

Asked if the IPL’s edition No. XII will be a make or break one for RCB, Nehra replied: “No... The T20 format is such that you can’t predict and you cannot enter an edition thinking it will be a make or break one...

“I’ve been on the support staff of RCB from only the last edition, so I cannot comment on why the IPL trophy has never been won by the franchise. However, RCB have made three finals.”

That is correct, but two franchises — Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians — have each won the IPL three times.
