Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting weren’t exactly dominant as they were expected to be, particularly after their victory over Mohun Bagan on Sunday.
However, they kept the basics right and didn’t commit mistakes in defence before eventually pulling off a 2-0 win over Aryan in Wednesday’s CFL Premier Division Championship Round tie, at the Barasat Stadium.
Ugochukwu Godswill and Ashim Biswas were on target as Mohammedan Sporting moved up to the second position in the league table with 15 points from six appearances, behind only by goal difference to table toppers Tollygunge Agragami.
Making inroads was difficult against a gritty Aryan side that packed their defence, giving little room to the opponents.
Mohammedan Sporting tried to break free through the right flank. Imran Khan and Ashim tried to go on the offence, but the moves were wasted thanks to poor execution.
After a barren first half, coach Fuja Tope changed his tactics, getting his team to be more attacking to create further pressure on the Aryan defence. The deadlock was finally broken, eight minutes into the second session.
Aryan goalie Anupam Sinha missed the flight of a Rajiv Ghosh floater as the ball went straight to Adelaja Somide. His attempt came off the crosspiece, but Godswill was in an ideal position, and had no problem to head the ball into an open net.
Thereafter, Mohammedan Sporting were all over Aryan. Ashim, pivotal to Mohammedan Sporting’s prospects this season, came up with the icing on the cake in the added-on time, nodding home substitute Gaur Naskar’s set-up off Bijoy Maddi’s corner. “We’re being consistent with our performance this season… That’s what will matter in the end…” Tope said later.
