Calcutta/Bangalore: AB de Villiers and captain Virat Kohli orchestrated a mayhem by scoring magnificent centuries as the Royal Challengers Bangalore inflicted a crushing 144-run defeat on the Gujarat Lions, recording the biggest ever victory in the history of IPL at the Chinnaswamy on Saturday.

Batting first, the RCB plundered a massive 248 for three, thanks to De Villiers's 129 not out and an equally attractive 108 by Kohli with records falling like ninepins. Kohli also became the first player to score three centuries in an IPL season and two against the same opponents in one edition.

Having been deflated in the first session itself, the Lions capitulated to a meagre 104 all out in 18.4 overs with Chris Jordan picking up 4/11 in three overs and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal getting 3/19 in his four overs.

With 10 points from 11 games and a positive net run-rate of +0.63, the RCB can still fancy their chances of making the play-offs.

While this is the second highest team score in the history of IPL behind 263 for five - by the RCB against the now-defunct Pune Warriors, the Kohli-De Villiers stand eclipsed its own partnership record by pummelling the Lions to add a staggering 229 runs in just 16 overs.

De Villiers smashed a scintillating unbeaten hundred off 52 balls with 10 fours and 12 maximums while Kohli, en route his third hundred, hit a brilliant 109 off 55 balls with the help of five fours and eight sixes.

Overall, the duo hit an astounding 20 sixes compared to 15 fours as the square boundary of the Chinnaswamy turf looked too small at times.

The start was not that great for the RCB as an out-of-touch Chris Gayle played on to a Dhawal Kulkarni delivery. Kohli was cautious to begin with and it was De Villiers who was first to get off the blocks with a flurry of sixes.

The first was a cover-driven six off chinaman bowler Shivil Kaushik. In the next over, he slogged Pravin Tambe behind square for another huge blow.

Kulkarni's friendly medium pace was imperiously pulled for a six. When De Villiers completed his hundred, Kohli was still in his 50s, but he increased the pace at the rear end of the innings.

A flurry of sixes off Kaushik, Dwayne Bravo and Praveen Kumar saw Kohli reaching the coveted hat-trick of hundred in the final over of the innings and the fate of the match looked all but sealed.

The Lions wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik said the team will need to forget the mauling it got from De Villiers and Kohli.

"We cannot do much if two greats are going great guns and without giving any chances. We could have batted well after the rivals had posted 248 runs. It becomes difficult for any side chasing a big target.

"This is one of the games we just need to forget and try and focus on our next two games," Karthik said.

Karthik called Kohli and De Villiers's knocks mind-boggling. "They were mind-boggling. I think these kinds of innings are not played often.

"They are two special players and they really stood up for their team to post victory in a crucial stage of the tournament," he said.

Asked if the team could have checked the flow of runs, Karthik said: "We got to believe in getting batsmen out. To be frank, our bowlers did try. But Kohli and AB took the game away from us by playing incredible shots, especially AB who was on a song, hitting sixes off the back foot."
