Third seed Jilke Nelord and fourth seed Shilpi Jaiswal crashed out of the SPS Elegant Central Excise AITA Open grass court tennis championship on Tuesday.
Nelord went down 2-6, 4-6 to Akshita Basavaraju of Karnataka while Tamil Nadu’s Grace Hannah defeated Shilpi 6-3, 6-4 in the pre-quarter finals. Second seed Ragini Vimal and fifth seed Shivika Burman also moved into the quarter finals beating Chennai’s B. Svarupa Raadhae 6-3, 6-2 Richa Valechha 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
Former Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Ram Bhattacharya passed away recently at a city nursing home. Bhattacharya, 90, who also played for Aryan, was brilliant in Aryan’s 4-1 win over Mohun Bagan in the 1940 IFA Shield final. He is survived by wife, one daughter and two sons.
Saheed scored the winning goal in the 40th minute as George Telegraph beat Railway FC 1-0 in a Prodyut Dutta Memorial football match in Barasat Tuesday. Wednesday’s match between Peerless and Eastern Railway has been postponed due to bandh.
