Excess bleeding

I am a 30-year-old schoolteacher. For the past six months I am suffering from excessive menstrual bleeding which occurs at regular intervals. I find the problem a bit embarrassing. Please help.

I would suggest that you consult a gynaecologist immediately because excessive blood loss will affect your health by making you anaemic. Excessive bleeding during periods may be due to some tumour in the uterus or due to endometriosis . Pelvic inflammation may also cause such bleeding. The doctor might ask you to do certain tests like ultra-sonogram of the pelvis, estimation of haemoglobin in blood, blood-clotting tests, thyroid function test. These reports will enable your doctor to treat you accordingly.

vaginal discharge

I am a 35-year-old married woman. I am suffering from white discharge with itching in the vulva for the last three months. I’ve consulted a local doctor, but there has been no improvement. Can you suggest a remedy?

White vaginal discharge and itching are outcomes of an infection. Get your blood sugar level checked as diabetes often predisposes patients to such a condition. However, I’d like to advise you and your husband to take a course of metronidazole tablets to combat the infection. But please take it only under a doctor’s supervision. You should also undergo a PAP smear test to detect the presence of abnormal cells in the cervix. On detection, further investigations should be carried out to arrive at a diagnosis. Please consult a gynaecologist at the earliest.

tumour

I am a 60-year-old woman. I had menopause 15 years back. But for the last two months, I’m having menses again. I am a bit confused as to why it’s occurring again. Please advice.

It appears that you are having post-menopausal bleeding. You need a proper evaluation of the condition, because in post-menopause bleeding may mean that you may have some gynaecological cancer. Investigations like endometrial sampling, hysteroscopy, etc, should be carried out under the supervision of a gynaecologist. After a confirmed diagnosis, the gynaecologist will plan a treatment accordingly.

scanty menses

I am a 20-year-old college student. I suffer from irregular menses with scanty bleeding. I also have excessive hair on my face and body. Please suggest a remedy.

It seems like you’re suffering from a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (POS). In your age, the most common cause of scanty period with male like hair distribution is due to POS. The condition is characterised with multiple small cysts (fluid filled sacs) in both the ovaries. The mainstay of management for this disorder is life style modification (weight reduction) and small doses of oral contraceptive pills. However, I will advise you to consult a gynaecologist at the earliest.

Severe cramps

I’m a 17-year-old student. For the last two years, I am having severe cramps during menses. Please suggest a remedy.

I would like to assure you first that painful menstruation at your age is not due to any disease or any sort of complication. It occurs due to the normal process of menstruation. Consult a gynaecologist to overcome your fears. I presume that she will simply ask you to take anti-spasmodic drugs during periods,to get rid of such pain. However, get an ultra-sonogram of the lower abdomen done to exclude conditions like endometrial polyp and fibroid, which are, however, very rare at your age.
