Spotify is bringing the ‘heart’ and the ‘Add to Playlist’ icons into a single ‘plus’ button, which will allow users to save all songs, albums, playlists, audiobooks and podcasts to their library with a single tap. It’s a small but important change to its UI and it’s designed to make it easier to save content.

“Starting today, we’re consolidating the heart icon and the ‘Add to Playlist’ icon into a single symbol: the plus (+) button. When you hit plus (+), you’ll be able to save and choose the destination for any song, playlist, or podcast with a simple tap. This upgrade is the latest step in our ongoing work to create a more intuitive experience—all leading to an easier way for you to engage with the music and podcasts you love,” the streaming service has said in a note.

The button will change to a green checkmark once the content has been saved. It’s rolling out globally on Android and iOS.

We will have to see whether the change is accepted globally. A heart icon is widely used across many leading apps, including Apple Music, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram. Twitter, in fact, changed its star-shaped favourite/like button to a heart in 2015 since the heart is a more universal symbol.

Recently, Spotify has offered many new ways to improve the user experience. For example, last week, the music streaming service rolled out ‘DJ’, a new AI feature that gives users a curated selection of music alongside AI-powered spoken commentary.
