Anubinda Sangeet Ashram paid a tribute to the deceased Kishori Amonkar with a well-organized musical concert at the Birla Academy. Papri Chakrabarti (picture) - a sincere disciple of Kishori Amonkar - along with her students presented a guru vandana. This was followed by the artist's solo vocal recital. Chakrabarti commenced with Raga Shuddha Kalyan, the first raga she had learnt from her guru. Her voice was sharp, powerful and generous on the notes. She tried to follow the exact style and mannerisms of her great teacher, but her voice possesses its own quality, and she performed with effortless skill.
Chakrabarti rendered the vilambit kheyal, "Eri mayi piya", with varying movements of the keynotes; the vistaars and the taans were interesting. Her drut kheyal was arresting as well, especially the taans in the middle and upper octaves. She continued with Meerabai ki Mallar, and sang a traditional composition, " Tum Ghan se Ghanashyam" in rupak. She concluded with a bhajan of Meerabai, "Matwaro badal aye", which could have been shortened a little to avoid monotony. Chakrabarti was accompanied by Supriyo Banerjee (tabla) and Paramita Das (harmonium).
Partha Sarathi's sarod recital in the second part of the programme disappointed the audience. He started with the Raga Megh; the performance was ordinary, and his effort to lengthen it ruined the charm. After the alaap, jor and jhala, he started a gat in Miyan ki Mallar. The beginning created a spark, although the unnecessary jargon, especially in the drut gat, rendered his recital forgettable. He was accompanied by Ashish Paul on the tabla.
The annual event of Muktadhara Dakshin at Shishir Mancha was enriched with Ragpradhan compositions, bhajans and taranas in different ragas. The addition of the songs of Himangshu Dutta was refreshing. The chorus of 25 vocalists under the efficient supervision of Namita Bandyopadhyay elevated the performance. The second part of the programme included dance compositions based on Rabindrasangeet that was originally influenced by Carnatic music. Urmila Bhoumik's choreography and direction made it gorgeous.
