Bhubaneswar, Feb. 24: Lingaraj police today recovered the body of a 22-year-old cost accountancy student from a well on the Baruneswar temple premises at Samantarapur. The youth, who had been missing since February 22, was suspected to have committed suicide following poor performance in examination.
The temple priest informed the police when he saw the body of Kirti Ranjan Muduli floating in the well this morning.
“Like everyday we went to fetch water from the well today and found the body floating on the water. We soon informed the police,” said the priest, who described Kirti as a good and well-behaved youth.
Sadanand Muduli, father of the deceased, said his son was studying cost accountancy in an institute in the city. “His result was declared on February 20 and he had failed to clear the exam. Following this, he went into a depression,” said the grieving father, who works as a plumber.
Kirti was staying in the area with his father and younger brother. He had been studying at the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants for the last two years. But, he could not got through first-year for doing poor in examinations.
Every morning, Kirti used to visit the temple and helped the priest. But, since February 22, he went missing.
“We searched him at various places. We even had lodged a missing report at Lingaraj police station. This morning, we were informed that his body was found in the temple well,” the father said.
The police registered an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem. The police said prima facie investigation showed Kirti had committed suicide. The youth’s family members have not lodged any complaint.
“We are surprised at how the people working at the temple could not know about the body that had been in the well since February 22. They had fetched water from the well for rituals for the last two days. We are inquiring into the matter,” said a senior police officer.
In another case, a 60-year-old woman lost her legs after falling off a train at Bhubaneswar railway station this morning. The woman, identified as Nagamani, was going to Berhampur. She fell off the train when she tried to board it when it was leaving the station.
