The third edition of Godrej LOUD (Live Out Ur Dreams) 2014 took place at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, (XIMB) last week. LOUD is an innovative campus initiative to help young and talented Indian students realise their dreams that had been shelved due to career or sponsorship constraints.
Around 200 students participated in the contest. Finalists will be invited to share their dreams at the headquarters in Mumbai in September and winners will receive upto Rs 1.5 lakh each towards fulfilling their dreams and a pre-placement summer internship programme at the manufacturing giant. With over 733 applications across nine campuses, the last edition saw a tremendous response.
This year the contest has introduced some new initiatives such as ‘Insider of the campus’, where students can win a chance to be featured on the national television.
They can also perform their version of the LOUD anthem. The winner will get the opportunity to perform at the grand finale and be judged by renowned Indian rock band Indian Ocean.
Say no to ragging
With admission process nearing the end, Utkal University is leaving no stone unturned to ensure everything is in place for the newcomers. The authorities were seen instructing the admission seekers and newcomers to immediately report any incident of ragging to their lecturers and to be fearless while filing such complaints. Despite the authorities’ best efforts, incidents of newcomers being ragged by their seniors crop up every now and then. Senior officials are concerned about eradicating this menace. Also vigilante student units have been put in place to make the varsity a zero tolerance zone towards ragging.
Foreign ties
International Management Institute (IMI) Bhubaneswar is in talks with Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark, for student exchange programme with a view to offer its students an international perspective. IMI-B is also planning to set up a joint research centre with CBS and start executive programmes in the areas of innovation and strategy. Also, Sudhanshu Rai, director-Indian relations and professor of innovation in emerging economics at CBS, Denmark delivered a talk in the campus recently.
Women on web
Google Business Group, Bhubaneswar, in association with KIIT e-Cell had an event coordinated and managed by Vishal Mishra and Ashesh Das, students of KIIT University on “Grow your business with digital marketing” last week. The guest speaker was Ranjan Jena, expert in digital marketing and media. CEO-founder of Brogels and Bookkida, Sidharth Das delivered a motivational e-talk. The occasion also saw the launch of KIIT e-cell initiative titled “Women on Web”. The initiative aims to connect, grow online presence and technology orientation of women. It is meant for women from all walks of life – entrepreneurs, homemakers and students.

Musical medicos
A group of medical students at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) last week launched their first music album titled Saawariyaa. The lyricists and composers are also from the college. Maitri Rang, an intern at the IMS has been force behind the project besides lending her voice to three of the six songs in the album. A five-year old music band of the college called Saaj has brought out the album. While the band has both present students and alumni, they have also included freshers and other students to be part of the album. Jagatjyoti Biswal, a final-year student, has crooned the title song Saawariyaa. The other songs in the album included Sajnaa sung by Suraj Kumar Agrawal, now a junior resident doctor in Sum Hospital and Sohom Ghosh, a sophomore. Two interns Sohom Ghosh and Madhusmita Parida, sang a duet titled Woh jo ratein. Saroja Subhrajyotsna of fourth year have sung Teri Yadein, while Maitri, Suraj, Madhusmita, Sohom, Saroja and Jayesh Pattanayak have lent their voice to another song Saaj.
Golden jubilee plans
Yearlong programmes, including festivals, exhibitions, workshops and seminars will mark the golden jubilee celebrations of Rama Devi Women’s College. The autonomous college, which was established in 1964, also plans to construct a 1,500-seater convention hall and a hostel with a capacity of 400, this year. A counseling cell will also be set up under the psychology department to provide all kinds of counseling such as for personal issues and for psychological problems. The college plans to build a hockey team under the guidance of ace hockey player Dilip Tirkey. As part of the celebrations, the college also plans to make a documentary film that would highlight the achievements of the institution in academics, sports, and extra-curricular activities.
Lead by example
A part of the teacher’s job is to lead by example. Teachers from various institutes are winning laurels. Their achievements surely come as inspiring tale for the students. Ipseeta Satpathy, professor SoM, KIIT University was awarded the prestigious Oxford Journal Distinguished Research Professor Award 2014, at Cambridge University, London recently. Satpathy received the award from professor Kenneth Garren of USA, who is the noted academic. Eminent artist and principal of Dhauli College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, Panchanan Samal participated in the National Art Camp organised at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh recently. His piece on the Buddha also found a place in exhibitions to be held New Delhi and Canada soon.
Wise words
The governor of Odisha SC Jamir urged the students to make best use of time and opportunities available in the university and prepare for life and career with confidence. “Bring cheer to the society and glory for the institution,” he said while addressing the student community on the occasion of foundation day of the FM University, Balasore, last week. He told the students to be courteous, humble and lead a disciplined life. “Learning does not end with graduation” was his message to the students, while telling the teachers to improve the quality of our education system.
