The third national handloom day was observed on the permanent campus of the Central University of Odisha in Sunabeda on August 7. The event aimed to generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry. Vice-chancellor of the varsity Sachidananda Mohanty inaugurated the programme as chief guest and delivered a speech on the importance of the handloom industries in the socio-economic development of the country. Six eminent weavers of the Kalahandi-Balangir-Koraput region were felicitated on this occasion.

Hotel management

Eighteen students of the faculty of hospitality and tourism management of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University have flown to Malaysia on job training at six reputable five-star hotels.  These students are being trained in Sunway Hotel and Spa, Eastin Hotel, Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Dorset Grand Subang Hotel and Doubletree by Hilton in Kuala Lumpur and Thistle Port Dickson Resort at Port Dickson. The SOA University has been keeping an eye on the changing dynamics of the hotel management sector to raise the standard of education in the hospitality industry and provide jobs to aspiring managers.

Freshers’ event

The DAV School of Business Management conducted a swearing-in ceremony for BBA and BCom freshers on August 4. Chief guest Sarat Chandra Satapathy urged the students to nurture habits of reading literature and writing. President of DAV School of Business Management M.M. Panda told the students about their commitment towards the society. The new students took the pledge to abide by the rules and principles of the management school and presented their literary work along with advanced visual effects. 

Tech competition

Global computer giant Cisco is hosting the Cisco IOT Hackathon grand finale at the Trident Academy of Technology from August 8 to 10. 

In the programming competition, 15 finalist teams consisting of 60 students will present their innovative ideas. The process started from March 1 in which 4,000 students from various universities and technical institutions of Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh |registered.

Vernacular media

A lecture on global capitalism and vernacular media was held at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal, last week. 

Speaking on the occasion of Odia journalism day, retired professor and head of department of sociology, Utkal University, Anup Das said the vernacular media was becoming vulnerable. Visiting faculty Subir Ghosh discussed the role of vernacular media in India's freedom struggle.

Chess event

The 18th National Cities Team Chess Championship was hosted at Kalarabank village in Cuttack district on August 6. KIIT University and Jagatsinghpur District Chess Association jointly organised the tournament. 

For the first time in the country, a national-level chess event was held in a rural area in which more than 150 chess players, including state chess players Swanshu Mishra, Aparajita Gochhikar, Saina Salonika and Kiran Manisha Mohanty, took part. The tournament was played in seven rounds and the final round was held on August 9. Four best teams will be selected from the tournament for the Asian Cities Chess Championship to be held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar from August 26 to September 1.
