Balasore: A newly built weapon park on the Proof and Experimental Establishment campus at Chandipur was thrown open to civilians on Tuesday.
Defence Research and Development Organisation chairman S. Christopher inaugurated the park as the unit observed its 123 installation day.
Additional director (military affairs) Col Rutupurno Sengupta said: "This museum would speak the might of Indian military even in the pre-Independence period. Fourteen vintage weapons, including those used in the first and second world wars by the Indian Army and Navy, are being displayed in the park."
"It is a bid made by the Proof and Experimental Establishment, an acclaimed test and evaluation range, to conserve our heritage weapons," he said.
The museum will remain open for the general public on the days when test-firing of defence weapon does not take place in the area. "This would attract and inspire the young generations, especially the student community, towards the Indian defence force," said Sengupta.
"With the beginning of testing of the 12-pound Sharpnel from the Chandipur range 122 years ago, the Proof and Experimental Establishment, is now transformed into a world-class dynamic test and evaluation centre of armament stores," said a senior scientist.
The Proof and Experimental Establishment, during its weeklong celebrations, is organising several programmes, including cleanliness and blood donation drives, sports and cultural events.
Karunakar Bandha, a senior scientist, was awarded as "Scientist of the Year" for designing a cost-effective innovative project.
