Bhubaneswar, July 19: A case of mistaken identity ended in a team of policemen of Balipatna police station being allegedly beaten up by local residents of Kakarudrapur village when they had gone there to arrest a person wanted in a theft case.

Sources said the police team consisting of a sub-inspector and four constables reached Kakarudrapur village in search of Prakash Sethi, who was involved in a theft case.

But the police ended picking up Prakash Parida. He repeatedly told the police that he was not the person who had committed the crime.

As the news spread, villagers turned up and told the police not to spare Parida. This led to an altercation that ended with the angry mob allegedly beating up the police personnel.

“We repeatedly told the police that the person they wanted to arrest was not Prakash Sethi. But the police did not pay any heed,” said Sarangdhar Sahu, a villager.

Balipatna police officials said few goons had looted a transport vehicle on July 8. The police had arrested Debashis Nayak in this connection and during the integration Nayak had revealed the name of his accomplice Prakash Sethi.

“Since then we have conducted several raids to nab Prakash. During the raids Prakash’s brother Ramesh had given us the cell phone number of his brother. Since then we have been keeping a track of the mobile. But when our team reached the village tracking the number it came to know that the number was being used by Prakash Parida and not Prakash Sethi,” said a police officer of Balipatna police station.

Police officials said that they have started an investigation to find out the link between Prakash Sethi and Prakash Parida. “The villagers have asked for two days time to help us nab Prakash Sethi,” said a police officer.

The police are also planning to register a case in this regard. “The incident was unfortunate. The villagers instead of cooperating with us manhandled our staff,” said a police official.
