Cuttack: The National Law University of Odisha (NLUO) has taken up a case of alleged inaction of police on a woman's FIR for rescue of her minor daughter.
NLUO's Centre for Access to Justice (CFAJ) has sought immediate criminal proceedings against the accused on the basis of the FIR lodged at the Cuttack Sadar police station by Lata Bhoi of Baral village of Bayalish mouza.
In the FIR, Lata had alleged that "her 15-year-old girl has been deceitfully kidnapped".
The CFAJ up the case after receiving an application from Lata Bhoi alleging inaction on her FIR lodged on January 18.
In a letter to the deputy commissioner of police (Cuttack), programme associate of the legal aid clinic at the CFAJ Durbadal Mohanty has pointed out that "almost a month has gone from the date of the FIR. But to our utter surprise, the concerned police station has not taken any action to trace the accused and to rescue the girl".
"Despite submission of Lata Bhoi that her daughter has been forcefully kept at Vijaywada by the accused, the concerned police station has not paid any heed to the cry and worry of the parents. Hence, this application is made before you for appropriate legal intervention to initiate criminal proceedings against the accused and immediate rescue of Subhadra Bhoi," Mohanty said in his letter on Saturday.
Confirming receipt of the letter, deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh told The Telegraph on Sunday that "the inspector in charge of Cuttack Sadar police station has been asked to look into the case personally and try to rescue the girl as early as possible."
According to the complaint, 20-year-old Pabitra Bhoi of Baral village kidnapped the girl on January 15.
The CFAJ's legal aid clinic has sought the DCP's direction to appropriate authority "to constitute a special team to rescue the girl, arrest the accused Pabitra Bhoi and initiate legal action for strong prosecution, invoke relevant section of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act against Pabitra Bhoi and direct the inspector in charge of Cuttack Sadar police station to inform the complainant about the progress of investigation from time to time".
