Bhubaneswar, July 11: At least 100 junior colleges in the state have received less than 10 students after admission of candidates in the second selection list was completed on Tuesday.
Of these, 20 colleges have recorded zero admission and 12 colleges have got a single student each admitted. Seventeen colleges from Cuttack and 19 colleges from Khurda fall in this category.
Sandilya College of Science and Commerce at Ainthapalli, which was drawn into controversy following the Plus Two paper leak incident, has managed six students.
Statistics released by the department of higher education on e-admission shows vacancies of over 65,000 seats in junior colleges.
With admission of the SC/ST extension seats, spot admission and admission of supplementary and instant examination yet to take place, authorities hope that a few thousand seats will be filled up.
Of the total 3,27,300 seats in 1,390 junior colleges across the state, 2,37,254 students took admission in the first selection and 24,136 in the second selection.
“The vacancy position will not remain so grim after the admission process is over. This time, we are providing them with a wider choice instead of limiting them to just six colleges,” said Mihir Das, state nodal office for college admissions.
About 88,084 students appeared the Class X supplementary examination.
The scene was equally grim last year, as over 38,000 seats remained vacant in junior colleges.
