Bhubaneswar, June 7: Authorities have made arrangements to switch on to a dedicated server from a private company for a stable e-admission system that has been facing technical snags since its launch by Utkal University because of frequent power cuts in the state.

“There have been some hiccups as the university’s local server, used for the purpose, is affected because of frequent power cuts,” said P.K. Rath, head of the university computer centre, adding that they were tying to fix the problem soon.

“This will be in place by next week,” said Rath.

Forms for 49 postgraduate and UGC innovative courses were made available today and can be downloaded till June 30. Forms for four self-financing subjects — Integrated MCA, MSc computer science, MTech computer science and masters in finance and control — were available from May 20.

Response to the online system that had been dull during the initial days has picked up gradually from the second week. As compared to all previous years, many students from outside the state have applied this year. Applications have reached from Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.

“The numbers have almost doubled. While there were about 10 applications from outside the state till last year, this time, there have been over 25 applications. The numbers may go up as there is still time left ahead of the last date,” said Chandrasekhar Biswal, one of the students, who have developed the software for e-admission.

Students, trying to log on to the website, complain that at times they are finding it reading: “Admission system is temporarily out of service due to maintenance work. We will back shortly.” Others, however, are finding the site working fine. “It was all right when I downloaded the form today,” said Pitabasa, a student.

In another development, the helpline, launched by the varsity, has also been receiving huge response. Students have been calling up with several queries. “The callers are mostly students and guardians from the rural areas,” said Biswal.

PG council chairman P.K. Mishra said each department in the university should be ready to carry on admission for their respective departments. “The university will soon hold training for staff members of all the departments, so that they can carry on their respective admissions from next year,” said Mishra.
