Bhubaneswar, July 14: Utkal University authorities have asked for additional police to be deployed on the campus that is tense in the wake of yesterday’s clashes between two groups.

The clash had left seven persons, including four students, injured. The authorities have sought enhanced security at the university till August 14.

“As the entrance examinations for the postgraduate courses are going on, we want peace on the campus,” said PG council chairman P.K. Mishra.

Tension continued to prevail on the Utkal University campus for the second day on Saturday as the two groups held each other responsible for the clashes. While students claimed that even non-students were involved in the violence, the authorities said that the clashes followed political rivalry between two groups of students who wanted to establish their supremacy.

Students’ union president Tanmay Swain had alleged yesterday that some students and non-students attacked his friends on Thursday night. On Friday, both groups clashed again near the Gopabandhu hostel. Five persons were injured.

While Swain and his friends had lodged a complaint with Saheed Nagar police on Friday, his opponents lodged a complaint today.
