Bhubaneswar, Feb. 8: The driver and helper of a truck were killed on Rasulgarh flyover on National Highway 16 in an accident this morning.
The deceased duo have been identified as 32-year-old Manas Kumar Parida, the driver of the Hyva truck, and Suraj Kumar Mansingh, 19, both residents of Khurda district. According to eyewitnesses, the Hyva hit another truck from behind.
Police suspect speeding to be the reason behind the mishap.
"Both the heavy vehicles were at high speed when the Hyva hit the truck from behind. The impact was severe. We immediately informed the police," said an eyewitness.
The police said that while the driver died on the spot, the helper succumbed to his injuries at Capital Hospital.
The accident disrupted traffic for around half an hour on the national highway. The traffic was eased after the cops towed both the vehicles from the spot. K.P Mishra, the inspector in charge of Mancheswar police station, said they had seized both vehicles and also detained the driver of the other truck.
"We are interrogating the driver of the other truck," said Mishra.
Though Rasulgarh Square is not among the three black spots in the city, it has witnessed a number of accidents in the recent past. Local residents blamed the authorities for their inability to complete repairing the road. "It took four years for the authorities to complete the flyover, which led to a number of mishaps. After the flyover was ready, the authorities are delaying repairing the approach road, which is causing problems," said local resident Siddharth Das.
