Bhubaneswar, June 8: The Government Railway Police recovered two bodies from the railway tracks near the Satya Nagar overbridge this morning.
While one of the deceased worked with the customer care section of a mobile service provider, the other worked in a garage. Though both appeared to be suicide cases, family members of Arjun Ray, the 27-year-old customer care employee, suspected foul play.
Arjun’s body was found on the tracks, around 500m from Satya Nagar overbridge on the way to Master Canteen railway station this morning. Police found his shoes kept beside the tracks and a beer bottle near the body.
The 27-year-old, who hailed from Banamalipur village in Jajpur district, stayed at Chakeisiani. Though police was informed about his death this morning, his family members had come to know about it from his friends last night.
Arjun’s brother Ranjan Ray, a farmer, said after they got the call around 11.30 last night from his friend, a cousin of Arjun’s staying at Jagatpur in Cuttack rushed to Bhubaneswar. He went to the railway tracks at night to spot the body.
The family members of the deceased, however, could not figure out why his friends did not inform the police about the incident at night. “His friends did not go to the spot at night. We suspect foul play,” said Ranjan, adding that Arjun had no reason to commit suicide.
However, Arjun’s friend Subrat Sethi, who is preparing for banking examinations, said the deceased had called him around 5pm. “He told me it was going to be the last day of his life. At that time, he was near Saheed Nagar railway level crossing. He sounded upset, but did not give any reasons. As I was getting late for my coaching classes, I did not talk to him at length. When I called him up later, his mobile phone was switched off,” said Subrat, who stays in Unit-IV.
Arjun’s roommate Tapas Ranjan Mohapatra said the deceased had gone to watch the noon show of a film with his brother yesterday. “Later, my brother returned alone and told me that Arjun had gone to meet a friend. When we called Arjun’s phone several times, we found it switched off. Fearing something was wrong, Subrat and I went to search for him in the night,” said Tapas, who works for an automobile company in the city.
Subrat and Tapas found the body and informed Arjun’s family. They said they had tried to call the toll-free police control room number but could not get through. Both said they were too scared to go to the police station.
The police said that they were not sure whether it was a suicide or the deceased fell from the train, because the circumstantial evidence was not enough. “We have registered an unnatural death case. Investigation is on to know the exact reason of the death,” said a senior police officer of railway police station.
In the second case, the police found the body of Gangadhar Jena, 27, of Jharapada area in the city, from the railway track under the Satya Nagar over bridge around 10am. Jena worked at a garage in Satya Nagar. An eyewitness said he was hit by a speeding train while crossing the railway tracks.
The police said that Jena was hit by the Puri-Howrah Duronto Express this morning and died on the spot.
