Bhubaneswar, Nov. 19: Bhubaneswar Music Circle’s annual festival was an amalgamation of tunes from all over the country.
The three-day festival that concluded on Sunday saw senior artistes regale music lovers in the city with their brilliant voices and soulful instrumental recitals.
Melody and class blended on the final evening of the concert when violin exponent K. Bhubaneswary and Sanjeev Abhayankar, well-known Hindustani classical vocalist from Pune, performed individually. The violinist’s recital left the audience spellbound. While the instrument is usually associated with Carnatic notes, K. Bhuwaneswary’s Hindustani melodies were moving. She presented raga Gorakh Kalyan and a bhajan based on raga Ahir Bhairav.
Abhayankar rendered a series of ragas and devotional compositions. A disciple of Pandit Jasraj, Abhayankar captivated the audience with his rendition of ragas Malkaush and Bhairavi. He also presented a famous composition in raga Adana, Maata kalika, and bhajans such as Bhajore Mana Rama Nama Sukh Dai, a Marathi bhajan and a Holi-based folk song.
“It was wonderful to listen to Hindustani ragas on the violin. Similarly, Sanjeev Abhayankar presented a wonderful repertoire,” said Sweta Patra, a member of the audience.
On the second evening, Odissi vocal exponent Guru Keshab Rout presented Bata Chadide Jibi Mu Phula Toli in raga Behag, Sanginire Rasa Ranginire in raga Mishra Khamaj and Sarasa Jetiki Bandhu Birasa Setiki in raga Mukhari. The highlight of the day, however, was Carnatic classical singer Pantula Rama, who presented Tyagarajan’s Prakala Nilabani in raga Kharharpriya and many more classics.
“I feel honoured to perform in Odisha. It was heartening to see the audience appreciate our team of musicians,” said Pantula Rama.
On the opening evening, Pradip Patra’s Hindustani vocal rendition and Hindustani classical shehnai by Pandit Rajendra Prasanna left the audience spellbound.
“We are glad that the turnout was good. The auditorium resounded with applause on all the three days,” said Khirod Patnaik, secretary of the Bhubaneswar Music Circle.
