Bhubaneswar, June 30: Famous Odia artist Byomakesh Mohanty is being remembered through what he loved most - art.

Members of the art fraternity remembered the prominent artist who passed away on 15 June, 2010, at an international art exhibition titled Shradhanjali that began today at Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi here.

The exhibition showcases works by international as well as Indian artists from outside the state, apart from veteran and young Odia artists and photographers.

Works of two prominent Odisha artists who are no more - Sashi Bhushan Rath and Yashpal Singh - have also been included. Both the artists were based at Rourkela. Rath was a first-generation artist of post-Independent Odisha while Singh was known as the Vincent Van Gogh of Odia art.

A vast collection of paintings, photographs and installations are on display at the exhibition. Aamir Khatri from Pakistan has used mixed media to portray the challenges that women face in life while Wen Shu from China has intelligently used oil on canvas to depict landscape of a port. Striking works by artists from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Germany are also part of the exhibition.

Uma Shankar's installation Basic Instinct in metal is impressive and so is Rahul Mahakud's untitled sculpture. Asish Dash's painting Soul is also intriguing with its abstract patterns and bold colours while Sudhanshu Sutar's water colour portraying Gandhi is arresting. Manash Jena's Nabakalebar shows a comparison of metamorphosis of butterflies to that of the changing of body by Lord Jagannath while Sangita Patnaik's work of the same title shows a traditional painting with a contemporary take.

Veteran artists Jagdish Kanungo, Devraj Sahoo, Alek Sahoo, Sunil Patnaik, Ramakrishna Vedala and Lalatendu Rath have also showcased brilliant works.

"Artists Association of Odisha (AAO) has been hosting this exhibition in memory of Byomakesh Mohanty every year. He was a great artist and a wonderful person. We also feleicitate promising artists during the event," said painter Meenaketan Pattnaik, one of the organisers.

Known for his novel techniques in painting, Mohanty was popular among artists and art connoisseurs in and outside the country. He was only 53 years old and the secretary of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi when he died of cardiac arrest.

Known for abstract art, his works have been included as permanent exhibits at the galleries of National Museum of France and the Dusseldorf Art Gallery in Germany.

The exhibition is on till July 3.
