Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: A group of travel enthusiasts here are hosting an expedition from Puri to the Chilika sea mouth at Dhalabali inlet on February 13 to popularise coastal trekking in the state.

The expedition seeks to create awareness about various ecological and environmental issues and promote tourism.

Members of Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club, a group that promotes cycling, and Barefoot, a youth group that promotes "responsible tourism", are hosting the event.

From walking barefoot on the beach to experiencing coastal life, there is a lot to look forward to for travel enthusiasts.

"Our coastal belt is rich with scenic beauty and there is a lot to explore, such as the lifestyle of the fishermen community and wildlife. But, the people are hardly aware of it. Through the expedition, we would like to promote the concept that is popular in other coastal states of our country," said Sanjeeb Panda, inspector general of the Odisha State Armed Police and one of the leaders of the initiative.

During the 33-km journey, they also aim to create consciousness among the local people about various issues relating to climate change and the results of environmental degradation.

"We will distribute pamphlets among the fishermen explaining them about the various ecological problems that they need to be aware of for their own benefit. Most of these people are not aware of the benefits that they could avail from various government schemes. We will also inform them about the schemes," said Ajay Nanda, an organising member who runs a cycle store in Bhubaneswar.

The group had also conducted the event last year. "The expedition last year was limited among our acquaintances only. However, it drew a good response. So this time, we have invited youngsters and people from various sections to be a part of the expedition," said Yugabrat Kar, one of the organisers of the event and the founder of Barefoot.

Around 50 people have already registered for the trip. The trip will start from Baliharchandi on February 13 and the plan is to reach Dhalabali by evening and witness the sunset there.

"We have arranged for camping on the beach for the night and enjoy the calmness of the sea. Next morning, we will prepare breakfast on the beach," added Kar. Before leaving, they will conduct a beach cleaning campaign as well.

A number of adventure clubs from Bengal have also organised coastal treks from Chandipur to New Digha beach and from Paradip to Konark.

"We have planned to conduct similar trips on other coastal belts of the state as well. Many bureaucrats and prominent personalities have joined hands with us to promote tourism," said Nanda.
