Tough talk on college issues

The results of the student election polls have been declared and the winning contestants are in a jubilant mood.

Bhubaneswar, Oct.7: The results of the student election polls have been declared and the winning contestants are in a jubilant mood.

However, in the past week, the aspiring leaders had brought to light many important issues concerning the students.

The aspiring candidates had talked about the safety of the students on the campuses and the need to check the entry of the outsiders into the colleges.

Mahesh Babu, who was elected as the president of the Utkal university, had talked about the necessity of a police station inside the college campus to tackle situation of crises and to prevent untoward incidents.

"We will work to ensure that the institutions do everything to protect students from physical, social or psychological threats and assaults," he had said. He had also spoken to upgrade medical facilities on the college campuses. He said at least one ambulance should be kept ready for emergency situations.

"The entry to the residential quarters of colleges should be restricted to three or less, and the gates should be manned by at least three security guards, sufficiently armed. CCTV cameras should be installed on the campuses and visitors must be registered with their identity and contact details," his Gayatri Satapathy, the opponent of Mahesh Babu.

The aspirants had promised proper placements and recruitment of teachers in the colleges. While, others promised construction of over- bridges and toilets. Anasuya Tripathy, who was elected as the president of Ramadevi University said better sports facilities were required at the varsity.

Taking note of the regular incidents of violence on the Utkal University campus, the authorities today directed all students to vacate the hostels by the evening. University PG council chairman Ranjan Kuamar Bal said they would seek the help of police if students tried to forcibly stay back at the hostel.

According to reports two rival student groups had clashed on the campus last evening leaving three students injured. The cops had to resort to lathi-charge to control the agitating students.
