Too many cuts for comfort

Median cuts are major reason for traffic chaos in Bhubaneswar. The public works department closed down one such cut near Master Canteen Square last month. Later, three more were closed. The Telegraph takes a look at the situation on the road

City Women’s College

The new road connecting City Women’s College and Gandamunda joins Siripur-Fire Station Road at this junction, where there is neither any cop nor mechanism to check vehicles speeding in from all directions. Accidents are common here. In the absence of street lights, darkness engulfs the stretch after sunset. Residents of Orissa University of Agriculture Technology staff colony, Unit-VIII, Soubhagya Nagar, Baramunda, Gandamunda and Jagamara have welcome the closure of the median cut.

Shastri Nagar

Median cut in front of Unit IV community health centre had made the stretch accident-prone as two-wheelers coming from Shastri Nagar cared less for traffic norms to cross the road using the gap. Pressure from local residents made police close the cut.

Madhusudan Nagar

Situated about 75 metres from Shastri Nagar traffic square, this cut has been closed as it was causing serious problems, especially to office goers and students of schools in Madhusudan Nagar, Unit IX and Shastri Nagar.

XIMB Square

The PWD plans to close Xavier Square on the Jayadev Vihar and Nandankanan road would be closed. Traffic here flows from all directions as the area has several hotels, convention centres and educational institutions including XIMB, Loyla School and Odisha Remote Sensing Application Centre.

Police need to review median cuts on the Cuttack-Puri road. Many of them need to be closed immediately.
