The Central University of Odisha’s department of education organised a special lecture on becoming an efficient teacher on its main Sunabeda campus last week. Vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty, head of the department Ramendra Kumar Parhi, and Mizoram University’s professor of education Bana Bihari Mishra addressed the seminar. Experts advised the students to become efficient teachers and actively take part and contribute in nation building. Parhi highlighted the department’s activities, its extension activities like community study, internships for trainee teachers and other community-related activities.

Cancer awareness

The NSS Bureau of Utkal University and the Salaam Jeevan Trust jointly organised a seminar, “Mission Answer to Cancer” at Biju Pattnaik College to mark World Cancer Day on February 4. The seminar, held with principal Satyajeet Rai Choudhuri as chairman, was attended by NSS state liaison officer U.N. Sahoi who spoke about role of NSS volunteers and youths in controlling cancer. Two cancer survivors, Smarjit Kanungo and Deepak Panda, narrated their experiences and urged the gathering to not consume tobacco. Salaam Jeevan founder Md Imran Ali explained the early signs of mouth cancer and pre-cancer lessons. Besides, an awareness rally was also organised from the college to Jayadev Vihar with slogans asking people to give up tobacco for a healthier life.
 
Annual event

The Khariar Autonomous College students’ union celebrated its 40th annual event last week. The event witnessed a prize distribution ceremony and cultural programmes by students apart from an address by the union president. The occasion was an opportunity for the students and the college authorities to refer to the achievements and problems of the institution. Fanindam Deo, president of the college governing council, appreciated the efforts of staff members and students and said the college should make self-assessment at regular intervals. 

Talk on budget

The Bhubaneswar chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) organised a talk on the Union budget last week. Speakers said the budget would bring development in all sectors and help farmers and entrepreneurs grow. A number of company secretary professionals and ICSI students were present.

MoU signing

The Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (deemed university) has signed a MoU with Denmark’s Aarhus University and CTIF Global Capsule to develop research activities at the international level in information and communication technology, as well as collaboration in academics, research and faculty development. Aarhus University’s business development and technology professor Anders Frederiksen, CTIF Global Capsule president and professor of future technologies at Aarhus, Ramjee Prasad, and P.K. Nanda, dean (research and development) of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan signed the agreement on campus. Prasad said the collaboration would contribute to the regional understanding.

Extension congress

The First International Extension Congress was organised at ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture in Bhubaneswar. The congress was held with a vision of incessantly evolving and developing extension education. ICAR director-general Trilochan Mohapatra said extension was not technology transfer and went beyond working on other domains such as marketing. He also said extension would be a base for research and key for agricultural development in the country. Fifteen kiosks displayed the technology.

Leprosy fight

The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital organised a programme “Zero Disability in Girls’ and Boys’’ on World Leprosy Day. Medical professionals vowed to fight for the elimination of the disease. An awareness campaign was also conducted on the occasion. Department of dermatology, venereology and leprosy head Bikash Ranjan Kar, SUM hospital medical superintendent Pushparaj Samantasinhar and Ajay Kumar Jena, a doctor, spoke on the occasion.
