Bhubaneswar, June 30: Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship scheduled to take place from July 5 and July 9 at Kalinga Stadium here.

The entire stadium will be covered under CCTV surveillance and a temporary police control room will be set up on the stadium premises.

Forty platoons of police personnel will be deployed for the event along with 400 officers. Besides Anti-Terrorism Squad, jawans of Special Operation Group and Quick Response Team will also be deployed for smooth conduct of the event.

Police commissioner Y.B. Khurania said traffic management would be the priority.

"Adequate traffic personnel will be deployed on route to the stadium and security will be strengthened near the airport, hotels and guesthouses where the players and officials will stay. A detailed traffic advisory will be issued shortly. The CCTV footage of the stadium and near by areas will be monitored by our officials in the temporary control room," said Khurania.

He also urged the spectators to reach the stadium before time, as they would be frisked thoroughly.

In September 2015, criminals had stolen 10 cell phones and cash worth Rs 25,000 from 10 players in the Under-19 rugby team of Kerala. They had also allegedly snatched three mobile phones and cash worth Rs 10,000 from the players of the east zone at a dormitory of the stadium during All India SAI Inter Regional Hockey Tournament held in the same month. Both incidents caused major embarrassment to the stadium authorities.

The police said no one would be allowed to enter the stadium without valid passes and tickets.

"Seventy-two closed circuit television cameras will be installed, including at four parking lots, each of the entry and exit gates and galleries, in the stadium. Besides, several LED monitors will be placed at various places to provide real-time traffic data. Our officers will also be accompanying each team," said a police official. Authorities have made provision of parking of 500 four-wheelers and 2,000 motorcycles at the four parking lots near the games venue.

A sports department official said about 800 athletes from 45 countries would take part in the event, hosted by India for the third time. While, Delhi had hosted the event in 1989, Pune had the opportunity to organise the tournament in 2013. The winners will directly qualify for the World Championship in London, to be held from August 4 to 13.
