Three killed in accident

Three workers were killed when a speeding truck hit them from behind at Kalinga Nagar of the district on Sunday night.

Jajpur: Three workers were killed when a speeding truck hit them from behind at Kalinga Nagar of the district on Sunday night.

The deceased were identified as Tapan Kumar Sethy, 20, of Jamumunda in Kendrapara, Balaram Jena, 22, of Chandikhole in Jajpur and Rajendra, 21, police said.

Another person, injured in the incident, is identified as Chandan Kumar Nayak, 20. He is now admitted in a Cuttack hospital. The victims were workers of a contract firm engaged in a private steel plant in Kalinga Nagar steel hub.

"The incident took place about 10pm. The truck hit the youths near the BRPL plant on Jajpur Road-Kalinga Nagar state highway, when they were going to their rooms," said Kalinga Nagar additional superintendent of police Raja Kishore Dora.

The truck driver fled the scene, along with the vehicle, after the accident.

Many firm workers blocked the road demanding arrest of the culprits and compensation for the kin of the deceased. The roadblock was withdrawn following the administration's intervention on Sunday night. Police have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident. No one has been arrested in this connection.
