Jagatsinghpur: Police on Thursday arrested a 25-year-old for uploading objectionable videos of a minor girl on social media and making it viral.
The police said Suraj Khan from Tarikunda village in Jagatsinghpur police limits was infatuated with the victim. "The accused turned vengeful after she rejected his advances," said Jagatsinghpur police station inspector-in-charge Rajanikant Mishra.
Khan had stealthily taken videos of the minor and tried to blackmail her. He asked for sexual favours from her in lieu of not posting the victim's videos on social media.
"When the victim refused, Khan uploaded the video viral on social media," said Mishra.
The police probed into the matter following a complaint lodged by the victim with the help of state police's cyber crime unit.
"After we found prima evidence, we arrested the accused youth. He has confessed to the crime."
Khan was booked under sections 292 (representation of person or any other object in obscene manner), 294 (obscene act), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, Protection of Children From Sexual Offence Act, 2012, and sections 67 and 67 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
He was sent to jail after a local court rejected his bail plea.
The district police has adopted a zero tolerance policy towards such crimes following a directive from the state police headquarters, Mishra added.
