Cuttack, March 17: Unidentified anti-socials allegedly sneaked into the house of a businessman and carried away valuables, including gold ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lakh and cash Rs 50,000, at Nazarpur area under Jagatpur police limits.
The incident occurred between 9pm to 10pm yesterday when the house owner, identified as Devendra Nath Lenka (55), and his family members had gone to attend a marriage ceremony at Nemala, 35kms from Jagatpur.
“We had left home to attend the marriage ceremony at 7pm last night. Only when we returned did we realise that the anti-socials have decamped with gold ornaments and cash,” said Lenka.
Lenka, who is a businessman, was staying at the rented house along with his mother, wife and two children for the past five years at Nazarpur.
According to him, the thieves may have barged into the house through the roof, as the grill and the main gate of the house were intact when they returned around 11pm.
Lenka hails from Salepur area and has settled in the Millennium City for around 15 years. According to the Lenka, the burglars have looted cash worth Rs 50,000 and gold ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lakh that he had purchased for his daughter’s marriage next month.
“All the new gold ornaments including chain, earrings, rings, bracelets and bangles have been looted. Initially, we had suspected that jewellry of my wife which was around another Rs 3 lakh, which was also kept in the same locker, has also been stolen. But later we found those intact,” he added.
Police and forensic team along with dog squad reached the spot today to carry out investigation into the incident.
“The family members were not present in the house when the robbery took place around 10pm last night. According to them, one gold chain, four rings, two bracelets, two necklaces, six pairs of earrings along with cash has been stolen from the house. We have registered a case and have started investigation into the incident,” police said.
