Cuttack: An 18-year-old girl committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at a garments mall at Bajrakbati Road here.

The authorities of Vishal Garments Mall informed Mangalabag police station that a sales girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan in their storeroom.

The police reached the spot and brought down the body and sent it for autopsy to SCB Medical College and Hospital. "The post-mortem of the body would be conducted on Saturday," said a police officer.

Mangalabag police station inspector in charge Arun Kumar Swain said the deceased, Ranjita Mohanty of Bhagatpur, had been working as a sales girl at the garments mall for more than a year. "She was working at the storeroom on the fourth floor of the mall. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan with her churni. Her body was inspected and ligature marks were found on the neck," Swain said.

He added that they were not suspecting any foul play and that they were trying to ascertain what led the girl to take the extreme step. "Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the girl was suffering from depression for the last couple of days. This was confirmed by her family members. But the reason for depression was not known," he said.
