Bhubaneswar, July 4: The administration has formed "Team Bhubaneswar", consisting of government officials, to ensure smooth conduct of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships to begin at Kalinga Stadium here from tomorrow.

The team, headed by municipal commissioner Krishan Kumar, has members from the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Bhuba-neswar Development Authority and Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited. It will take measures to improve sanitation, eviction and electricity supply during the games.

While a team under the civic body's three zonal deputy commissioners will take care of sanitation, another team consisting of the development authority's additional secretary and enforcement squad will see that there are no encroachments in the city. Besides, a dedicated team of the corporation's electrical wing will maintain the power backup in the city. "We have tried to assign specific tasks to specific teams to ensure that the works get completed on time and the maintenance and repair jobs go smoothly," said mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.

The civic body has also set up squads in each of its three zones to undertake periodic checking of food items. The focus here will be on the eateries surrounding the hotels, where the athletes are staying. The officials have also decided to depute special sanitation staff in these areas to maintain cleanliness. The corporation will carry out sweeping twice a day across the city. The city health officer will co-ordinate with zonal commissioners and make surprise visits to various wards to ensure that the work is going on smoothly. The focus area will be the vicinity of Kalinga Stadium.

"The team will remain vigilant and make regular visits to the wards to check sanitation. Every day, the officials will visit 30 random wards. The civic body's Swachch Bharat cell will also co-ordinate with the ground-level officials to ensure the job is done in time," said a civic official.

The enforcement squad, which has been carrying out eviction around Kalinga Stadium and other parts of the city for the championship, will put a mechanism in place, so that encroachers do not reappear on the evicted space.

Besides, the electrical wing has formed another team of engineers and has been asked to complete the repairing and maintenance of electrical fittings. They will undertake immediate repair and maintenance during the games in case of any emergency failure of electricity or the fittings.

"The city has been transformed to host the games. It is a proud moment for us to be selected to host such an event. I applaud the administration's efforts and hope that they continue with their jobs in this manner even after the games are over," said Nayapalli resident Biraja Mohapatra.
