Cuttack, April 9: Teachers of Ravenshaw University have decided to continue with staging demonstrations to register their protest against the university authority's alleged indifference to their various demands.

More than 120 teachers under the banner of Ravenshaw University Teachers' Association (Ruta) sat on a dharna yesterday alleging that the varsity vice-chancellor had turned a deaf ear to their demands.

On March 22, the teachers had worn black badges and staged another protest in front of the vice-chancellor's office.

"As our demands were not fulfilled, we sat on a dharna in front of the vice-chancellor's office from 11am to 2pm yesterday. Even then, there was no response from the authority's side. So, we have decided to continue with our agitation," Ruta secretary Bikram Keshari Mishra told The Telegraph today.

"We will stage demonstration in front of the vice-chancellor's office from 11am to 2pm every day till we get a satisfactory response."

The teachers have some demands related to their service book, career advancement programmes, pension schemes and provident fund.

"Despite repeated appeals, the university is yet to notify advertisement for career advancement schemes (CAS) for timely promotion of teachers," alleged another member of the association.

Vice-chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi, however, said: "A process is on to fulfil the demands of the teachers as expeditiously as possible."

The teachers are reportedly peeved over inordinate delay in updating their service books.

"The service books of 22 faculty members, which were sent to the chancellor's office on June 28, 2014, are yet to be brought back to the campus. The delay is resulting in obstructions in pay fixation and promotion of the teachers concerned," said Ruta president Ramachandra Majhi.

The teachers are also disappointed over the university's alleged callousness in depositing NPS and GPF amounts, which are deducted from their salaries, on time.

"Teachers should not be deprived of their right to recurring interests of their deposits owing to university's arbitrariness," said a protesting teacher.

The teachers have also been demanding appointment of "one Class-III skilled support staff in every department to reduce non-teaching and secretarial burden of the teachers of different departmental heads in particular.

There are 24 departments in the university. But none has a support staff.

"Departmental heads are virtually functioning as full-time head clerks in their respective departments. Apathy to such working conditions has given rise to dissatisfaction, frustration and disappointment among the members of the teaching community here," alleged another member of the association.
