Bhubaneswar, Nov. 18: As many as 735 students got their degrees at the second convocation of Centurion University of Technology and Management.

Altogether 614 BTech degrees were awarded to mechanical, electrical, civil, computer science and electronics students apart from 71 degrees to MBA students and 50 degrees to MTech students at the event held yesterday.

Ten students received gold medals for their excellent performances in their respective courses.

Speaking on the occasion, scientist M.S. Swaminathan stressed on the importance of biotechnology and nuclear power.

While nuclear power is environment-friendly from the viewpoint of green house gas emissions, return from investment in biotechnology research is high.

He said that public sector institutions should accord priority to development of high-yielding climate-smart and disease-resistant varieties of seeds.

To ensure bio safety arising out of introduction of biotechnology, he insisted on setting up of a bio safety regulatory authority.

He said that technology had the power to transform people’s lives.

“With the introduction of new technology, food grain production in the country has reached 266 million tonnes. Apart from this, 260 million tonnes of fruits and vege- table have been grown. Milk production has gone up to 140 million tonnes in 2014 from 20 million tonnes 50 years ago. Even then, one in eight people go bed hungry every night. One in every three mal- nourished children lives in India. The need of the hour is to have post harvest technology and avoid waste,” said Swaminathan.

Chairman-cum-managing director, Bank of India, V.R. Iyer said 14 million young sters were added to the country’s workforce every year and this boosts economic growth.

Speaking about the changing scenario in the banking sector, she said that with the adoption of new technology, development of new products and creation of alternative banking channels to serve customers, the taste of customers have changed.

At the same time, various supportive measures such as development of rural roads, supply chain management, communication technology and financial services have changed the social texture of the rural economy.

She advised the young graduates to have the strength, patience and passion to adapt themselves to the changing world.
