Bhubaneswar, April 22: Sunil Meher, the alleged kingpin of a flesh trade racket in the city who was arrested from Calcutta yesterday, provided holiday package to clients and hired call girls on a monthly basis.
In order to find the modus operandi of Meher, the police today moved court seeking a five-day remand of the 33-year-old pimp. Sources said Meher used to provide a package of two nights and one day for Rs 40,000.
"The customer had to book the package using Meher's e-mail and bear the room charges of the hotel. Meher's job was only to pick up the girls from Bhubaneswar airport and drop them at the desired destination," said a police official.
The cops have also found Meher hiring girls on a monthly basis. "Sunil used to hire girls by paying them Rs 1.5 lakh on a monthly basis and bring them to Bhubaneswar. We are also told by few of his associates that Meher was also hiring foreign nationals from Delhi," said a police official. He was earlier arrested several times by the police for running sex rackets.
Deputy commissioner of police, Satyabrata Bhoi said that they would further interrogate Meher to find out his associates.
"Though he fled from the state nine months ago, we strongly suspect him of running the trade through his associates in the city," said Bhoi.
Meher's name resurfaced last month after Chandrasekharpur police rescued a 30-year-old sex worker from Kyrgyzstan on March 23. The cops later found Somesh Panda, who had brought the foreign national to Bhubaneswar, of having close links with Meher. Police said that the kingpin was luring women from the central and northern parts of India into the trade.
Sources said that Meher used to run a cloth store in Berhampur, but later shifted to Bhubaneswar in 2003 after the death of his father. Initially he used to run a small racket following which his wife divorced him. Later, Meher married another woman who assisted him in expanding his business. The police said that the woman was still active in the sex trade business.
Meher belonged to a family of six brothers and one sister. Meher studied in an English medium school in Berhampur and also passed his intermediate in arts from the city.
"Sunil had changed his mobile numbers around 50 times in the past 12 months. He has travelled several states, including Delhi and Haryana, after escaping from the city in July last year," said a police official.
